Neen hunt biography examples

For the past two weeks I have been working with 30 teachers on the island, who teach all different grade levels and a variety of subjects, to prepare them to pass a 80 question multiple choice test that will certify them. If they fail the certification test this year, they will not be able to teach on the island. There are no contractual agreements with teachers currently, but this will change as of 2016 when teachers will be under contract and must be certified to teach in the schools. Teachers can be absent 40-50 times in a school year without any consequences.  Now many people who have no training as educators, or very little knowledge of the subjects they are teaching, are able to teach in the schools. There are not many jobs that are available on Pohnpei- taxi driver, shop keeper, fisherman, farmer, sacou maker, road repairman, house repairman, carpenter, plumber, electrician, IT specialist-- and

teacher. There are very few doctors, lawyers or dentists on the island who are Pohnpeins. Many are
Australians, Americans, Filipinos, or Hawaiian.

The preparation material for the test is written in English and covers some very difficult subject to comprehend: reinforcement theory, cognitive learning theories, measurement theory, readability index, concepts in linguistics, norm and criterion testing.  Unfortunately, the reading and comprehension abilities of many of the teachers are not strong, so it was a challenge to convey the meaning of many terms and concepts.  I taught the teachers with 3 Pohnpein trainers so translation into the vernacular language was pretty frequent.

I have to admire the determination of the teachers here. We worked for 5 days from 8:30 to 4:30 and  their concentration levels were consistently high. The Pohnpeins have a terrific sense of humor so there was a lot of laughter as we worked-- and a lot of eating! On the final day, my host mother cooked up a batch of chicken and potatoes that I had purchased and we all feasted on these foods as well as 20 or 30 other dishes brought by the teachers themselves. It was a typical potluck!  Usually I don't eat too much of the local foods, but there were 50 or 60 fried fishes, and I tasted one and it was delicious--just tricky not to swallow very small bones- heads, tails and eyes on the fish as well.  Mostly everyone ate with their hands while I tried to find a plastic fork and knife.

We gave a final test at the end of the week-- a sample of the real test they will be taking next week- and I told the teachers we were expecting a 100% pass rate because they had worked so hard. 9 of the 30 failed the test and when we reviewed the errors it was clear that they couldn't understand the question because of the language barrier.  We will provide one final review next Wednesday, the day before the test.
